Jack is One

2010-09-01

When Charles called and asked me to shoot his son Jack's first birthday at the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Cleveland, I knew it would be a memorable experience.  You see, Jack is the only grandchild, on both sides, so he is a very special boy.  Over 30 people came out to celebrate with little Jack.  It all started out with casting lots on which occupation you thought that Jack would pick.  It is a Korean tradition that on the child's first birthday, they are to pick what they will become... and that involves crawling and grabbing an object from the table.

Everything was planned so beautifully.  The room, the tables, balloons, the cake (which was amazing), and here they had this table set up in honor of Jack.  Esther, his mother, made these end pieces.  They were covered in beans and individually glued on.  She had worked on them for several nights.

This was quite the Birthday cake!

Traditional Korean food:

Esther and Charles... Jack's lovely parents.

And here is Jack with his grandmother.

Here he is with his nanny.. oh, and his silver spoon!

He changed into this traditional Korean outfit:

He is about to pick...

What is he pointing to?

What a loved little boy.  It was a wonderful experience to share with you.  Happy Birthday Jack.

Rob + Cathy Married!

Pass It Along

Rob and Cathy were married at the beautiful Lantern Court of Holden Arboretum.  Their wedding was a really special display of two people who found their perfect match.  When I first met Rob and Cathy I knew this would be a great experience.

cleveland wedding photographer

This is one of the few weddings I've got to shoot with Nelli this year.  We both had different ideas for a nice ring shot.  Can you guess who took the 1st shot and who took the second?

destination wedding

Rob and Cathy made the decision to see each other before the wedding.  It was one of the best first sights I've witnessed.  Nelli and I both had different angles, but the true quality of these pictures is seen in the joy of these two joining each other for this special day.

But Rob and Cathy weren't the only ones who celebrated this day.  Sophie was a big part of the day.

These are a few of my favorites from a relaxing stroll through the grounds of Holden.

We couldn't forget some pictures on the goofy side.  These kids sparked it.

I love these portraits from the Lantern Court library.

One important aspect of the day was the weather.  Cathy really wanted an outdoor wedding, but it began raining about an hour before the ceremony, just after we finished most of the pictures.  I was really hoping we could do it outside, because I knew it was important to Rob and Cathy.  The best man went and check for us a few minutes before and it didn't look all that optimistic.

The rain stopped for just enough time to give us an outdoor ceremony at exactly the time the ceremony was to begin.

We couldn't start the reception without getting a few more pics of these cute kids.

So Nelli talked me into this one, and I was a bit hesitant, but I don't think Rob and Cathy minded getting away for a few minutes and venturing into the depths of the forest at night.  I really think they never stopped smiling the whole day.  It was a blessing to witness a couple so captivated by each other.  I hope you like our experiment.

Rob and Cathy, thank you for having us be a part of this wonderful wedding.  Your kindness was remarkable and we loved capturing these memories for you.

Dear Jesse and Nellie: We love the pictures and can't wait to see the rest! As we knew from the moment we met you, your artistic ability and talent and more importantly your warmth and compassion as individuals shines through. Coming from a family of camera shy people, you both make everyone feel comfortable in front of the lens. We continue to receive compliments from our guests on how wonderful, fun, and creative you both are. Words can't express how appreciative we are to have had you both present on our special day. As we expressed to you in our initial meeting, we hoped to find someone who could capture the spirit of the day and us as a couple and family, thank you from the bottom of our hearts! We feel very fortunate to have been able to have both of you shooting our wedding. The chemistry and energy between you both is highly contagious! Fondly, Cathy, Rob and Sophie!

Jennifer:

Chris and Sharon Engaged!

Pass It Along

I've shot more engagement shoots at this park than anywhere else.  Every one has been special.  This evening with Chris and Sharon was no exception.  Nelli and I have been trying to shoot together more often this year, and probably even more in 2011.  We've shot separately with our awesome associate photographers for a long time, so when we get a mid-week session when we're not both booked, we love to shoot it together.  This felt like a fun "date night out" for us.  Let me show you why.

We love taking photos together, so a midweek session is like a date for us where we get to be creative and get to know other couples.

This is where I passed the camera to Nelli.  Can you see what Chris has behind his back?

I love it when Nelli and I can combine our perspectives on a shot like this.

I think I found my favorite, but it was a tough choice.

I don't think I'm the only one.

I was so happy to be able to be able to shoot with Nelli that I had to post a photo of her as the intro to what soon became one of our best engagement sessions ever.  It was wasn't Nell? " Yes, It was Jesse."  Yes, Nelli says hello.  We sit here together editing photos, designing albums into the wee hours of the night.  She actually just brought me some jalapeno/garlic stuffed olives to give the little pick-me up I need.  Was it not the best ever Nelli?  "I think your last shoot is always your favorite." Yes.

Now for more of the most adventurous couple I know.  These two took some dangerous steps for these shots with us.  No broken cameras and several smiles later it was well-worth it.

Can't wait for this wedding!

James + Alexandra Married!

Pass It Along

James and Alexandra's wedding was such a classy event.  We did most of the photos at her parents' home in Vermilion.  It was beautiful sunny day, and the location was great.  It also has more of a sentimental feel to it, when you do photos at the family property.  I'm sure each place we chose had some memories attached.

durham NC

Yes, that's right - a beautiful wedding dress with pockets.

After an emotion-filled ceremony, we went back out to Alex's parent's house for some more shots after the ceremony.

When we first arrived, David, myself and the girls went out by the lake.  It was really bright out, but there were hardly any other people around.  It was quite the contrast to the beaches near Cleveland on Saturdays.  It was fun and peaceful.  The guys were hanging back at the house relaxing for a while.  I got the feeling that maybe they weren't sure about spending a bunch of time doing photos.  I later learned that some of them had experienced some "cheesy" wedding photographers in the past.  I hoped to shoot down that mantra with a cool guy shot as soon as they came out.  I love photographing guys with their pals equally as much as girls.  I know both guys and girls cherish good friendships and the memories that are attached.  I hope the guys like this next one.  I'm pretty sure they all had a good time.

and so did the girls

The time with James and Alexandra alone afterwards was great.  I'm glad they got to take the moment in alone for a while.

Westwood Country Club was really nice.  The reception featured some great appetizers during a nice long cocktail hour.  Everyone was catching up and having a great time.  We also had the privilege of enjoying the full Jerry Bruno orchestra, which I always enjoy.

Congrats Alex and James!  It was great getting to know you on your special day.

Jessy + Jerrod married

Pass It Along

One really special thing about Jessica and Jarrod's wedding at Buffalo Creek was getting to meet Jessica's family.  During the day we got to talk to her siblings and her parents, and there were a lot of siblings!  Jessica has 7 sisters and 4 brothers.  It seems I've had the opportunity to photograph some big families lately.  And having a big family myself, I really like that.  I get to see big families a lot further down the road than my own, and it's pretty cool.  Having six kids under the age of 12 can be a bit chaotic at times, but I've been told and I've witnessed the reward of when they are all older and they are all close friends.  It's very cool.  Jessica and Jarrod had perfect weather and a beautiful setting, along with support of a close family.

Here are all 8 of the sisters getting ready.

I love this next shot...all the guys getting the pics of their girls together.  One thing I love about shooting weddings is seeing other people taking pictures all day long.  It reminds me about how important it is to people.  I love seeing people capturing memories and smiling about the experience because I have the same sentiment.

So this is Jesse's entire family, including spouses and nieces and nephews.

And here are all the siblings with mom and dad.

I've been waiting for this shot for quite some time; waiting for just the right spot.  I hope you love it.

Nelli and I collaborated on this and I love it.  Her's was the idea of the girls blossoming out of the ground like a flower and I was able to contribute my balance and height.

These are my two favorite shots of the day...maybe

This is might be my favorite too.

Congrats Jarrod and Jessica!

Sophi:

Congradulations Jessy and Jarrod on being married. I really like the black and white picture of you dancing, and also the one of your sisters toast. I was there when they wrote it... it was interesting to say the least.

Jessy:

I lOVE all these shots. It is so hard for me to try and choose my favorite. I had a good idea in my head of how they would look as we were taking them and they are even more amazing then what I pictured. I am so happy! Photography was one of my top three most important things on my wedding day. I am so thankful for Jesse and Nelli, they have a wonderful talent.

David :

I would have to say these are pretty close to your best I've seen! AWESOME job Jesse and Nelli!
